Welcome back to our College for Teens Baking Camps this summer where students will get the chance to learn the foundational techniques of baking in the professional kitchens of Ivy Tech's Culinary Arts & Hospitality Administration Program! New this summer, Baking Science will introduce students to fundamental ingredients, techniques, and measurements used in baking. Through a combination of demonstration and hands-on activities, we'll go deeper into learning core baking science principles, which we'll apply to make pizza dough, cookies, cupcakes, bread, and more. This camp is for rising 9th-12th graders.
NOTE: This camp is not eligible for Ivy Tech Employee Fee Remission due to limited capacity.
SUPPLIES: All supplies are included. Students will receive copies of the recipes, as well as any remaining food to take home. We will communicate ahead of time any container requirements that are needed, though please be aware that our emphasis will be on learning and applying processes and theory, and the volume of completed bakes produced throughout the week may be lower for this topic compared to other baking camps.
PREREQUISITE: Students must be able to participate independently and have the concentration skills to pay attention to a task for long periods with minimal one-on-one supervision, as this camp is hands-on and can be physically demanding. Students must be able to stand for up to 3 hours, lift pans of food and mixing bowls, hold a rolling pin, stir for several minutes with a spatula, follow detailed directions, and have the dexterity to hold and cut with a knife.
DIETARY RESTRICTIONS: When completing the youth participation form for this class, please list any dietary restrictions, food allergies, or relevant medical information of which we should be aware. Recipes for all Ivy Tech baking camps can be made gluten or dairy free and can accommodate nut and fruit allergies. Recipes for this camp are not all vegan accessible or egg-free, but will all be vegetarian.
YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS: A limited number of scholarships are available for Ivy Tech Youth Programs participants. Students must be eligible for free or reduced lunch through the National School Lunch Program to receive a scholarship. If you are interested, please click here for more information.
