Learn the fundamentals of drawing in this beginner level course designed for new artists or anyone interested in returning to the basics, no experience required.
Class activities will include demonstrations and time for individualized instruction, and will cover concepts like contour, gesture, volume and weight, modeling, composition, and tonal values. We'll create and draw from still lives using objects we love and focus on developing a connection between eyes, hands and heart.
Whether you're looking to begin drawing with more intentionality or advance your current artistic practice, this course will help you on your way!
SUPPLIES: The following supplies or their equivalent are recommended for this class. If you have questions or concerns about purchasing supplies, please let us know prior to the class start.
NOTE: Bloomington Fine Art Supply, a local, independent art store located at 207 S. Rogers Street near the corner of 4th and Rogers Streets, has a copy of this list and will put together a kit of all the class supplies that you can pick up in their store. Required
- Drawing pencils in at least 4 different shades. For example, 1x 6B, 4B, 2B, HB, 3H, 5H
- 1 Ebony pencil
- 2 sticks of soft (6B or 4B) graphite
- 1 pad of 18"x24" newsprint paper (50 sheets recommended)
- At least 30 sheets of 18"x24" sketching paper
- At least 3 charcoal sticks
- Kneaded eraser
- Plastic eraser (Factis or Mars recommended)
- 1 bottle of black India drawing ink
- 1 No. 6 bamboo brush
- Spray fixative
Optional
- Drawing board with clips and large rubber band approx. 20”x26” (This is useful for drawing at home. Drawing boards and clips will be available for use in class.)
- Pencil sharpener (This will also be needed for drawing at home, though sharpeners are available for use in class).
- 1 china marker
- 1 cardboard portfolio 30"x24" to store/transport drawings
