Constellation’s Directing for the Theater: A Crash Course is a 6-week exploration of the fundamentals of directing for the theater, with an emphasis on visual storytelling, collaboration, and script analysis.
Course goals:
- Develop a fundamental understanding of the director's responsibilities, from pre-production to opening night.
- Learn how to analyze a script to find the play's themes, characters, and dramatic structure.
- Master core theatrical vocabulary, including blocking, composition, and visual storytelling techniques.
- Practice effective communication and collaboration with actors and other creative team members.
- Cultivate a personal directorial voice and vision for a theatrical piece.
Learning outcomes:
- Perform a thorough script analysis, including identifying beats and character objectives.
- Create a director's vision statement and communicate it effectively to a creative team.
- Block a scene with purpose, considering composition, focus, and dramatic impact.
- Employ various rehearsal techniques, including guiding actors' performances and integrating their work into a unified artistic vision for the entire production.
- Lead a short, final scene presentation, demonstrating the application of directing principles.
