CLL Ceramics Studio Space and Production Policy
The CLL ceramics studio is a space devoted to exploring the art and craft of shaping clay. The studio harbors a close community of people who choose to spend time, energy, and resources with their hands in clay. These ceramicists share not only knowledge, skills, experience, and stories with each other, but they also share the physical, limited space of the studio.
Shelf space ~ Shelves for holding work in progress is limited in length, depth, and height, and each student has their own limited amount of shelf space. The scope and dimensions of each student's work must fit within allotted shelf space. Holding space for greenware and glazed ware waiting to be fired is likewise limited.
Project size ~ The amount of space in the kilns is limited. Consequently, the CLL ceramics studio cannot accommodate the making of large-scale sculptures (unless such sculptures are composed of smaller parts, each made within the limits of shelf space, and finally assembled elsewhere, outside the studio).
Production pottery ~ The studio cannot and will not accommodate production pottery whereby a student generates large numbers of pots (e.g. 10+) during one session of making over closely repeated sessions of making with the intention of having these pots fired. The creation of a large number of pots during one session of making and then dissecting those pots and reclaiming the clay is both encouraged and recommended as a sustainable practice. The CLL ceramics studio is a learning space intended for experimentation and growth, and not high-volume production (unless a specific note is made in a class description regarding production volume).
Kiln usage ~ Use of studio and raku kilns is strictly limited to authorized personnel (i.e. Ivy Tech instructors and staff), and students may not handle the kilns without authorized personnel present. Exceptions may be made for advanced students (i.e. students in a class beyond the beginner level) who are supervised by instructors when learning kiln usage and safety practices for educational purposes.
Open studio hours ~ Open studio hours are available to currently enrolled students to work on class projects outside of class time as needed, as well as to pick up any pieces that still need to be fired following the completion of class. Please be aware of the open studio schedule provided in the studio and in class communications, as these hours vary from term to term. Please also respect the parameters of this schedule, the reserved studio time for specific classes, and the main campus building hours, and plan enough time to clean and pack up accordingly.
