Full of Flavor: Why Bloomington’s Historic “Vinegar Hill” Matters [In-Person or Zoom]

Bloomington and Monroe County are home to historic neighborhoods shaped by generations of residents who built homes, established businesses, and created distinct community identities. The growth of Indiana University, along with the region’s limestone quarries, mills, and manufacturing plants, drove demand for housing, education, and services for workers, professionals, families, and students. Many neighborhoods still reflect the industries and livelihoods of their earliest residents, while the most desirable areas attracted prominent builders who designed homes that showcased their craft and status.
 
The Vinegar Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers a compelling example of this layered history. This session explores the development of the district’s nomination and highlights Outstanding, Contributing, and Notable homes constructed over a 50-year span of styles. Along the way, we will share stories of residents and homeowners providing a vivid glimpse of life on the hill throughout the 20th century. 

NOTE: This class will be held at the Ivy Tech Bloomington Main Campus in a Learn Anywhere classroom space that also accommodates Zoom participants. All students will have the opportunity to attend either in-person or virtually via Zoom. Information for participating via Zoom will be sent no later than 2 days before the class start.
