Recent DNA studies and genealogical research suggest that more than half of Americans with several generations of family history in the United States have one or more ancestral lines originating in Germany or other German-speaking regions of Europe. This class explores the two major waves of German immigration to North America, tracing migration routes and settlement into expanding territories as families followed opportunities westward. We will examine how historical events shaped pioneer movements and identify where to find records with possible documentation of the first generations of German families in America. Common assumptions about "German" ancestry, including regional identities, changing national boundaries, and cultural distinctions, will be reviewed to help uncover family histories.
Participants should have some experience in genealogical research and be familiar with types of records and development of family trees and pedigrees.
NOTE: This class will be held at the Ivy Tech Bloomington Main Campus in a Learn Anywhere classroom space that also accommodates Zoom participants. All students will have the opportunity to attend either in-person or virtually via Zoom. Information for participating via Zoom will be sent no later than 2 days before the class start.
