AI in Genealogy Research: Harnessing Benefits, Understanding Limits [In-Person or Zoom]

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming genealogy, often influencing research in ways that are not transparent. This session explores how AI is integrated into genealogy platforms, research tools, and historical record analysis, and how genealogists can use these technologies thoughtfully and responsibly.

In this class, we will learn practical strategies for evaluating AI-generated information, maintaining evidence-based research standards, and safeguarding the accuracy of their conclusions. We will examine emerging AI tools that can streamline research planning, improve organization and documentation, assist with transcription and writing, and enhance overall workflow while preserving sound genealogical methodology. We will learn how to leverage AI as a powerful research tool while recognizing limitations, learning to apply AI with caution and critical evaluation.

Participants should have some experience in genealogical research and be familiar with types of records and development of family trees and pedigrees.

NOTE: This class will be held at the Ivy Tech Bloomington Main Campus in a Learn Anywhere classroom space that also accommodates Zoom participants. All students will have the opportunity to attend either in-person or virtually via Zoom. Information for participating via Zoom will be sent no later than 2 days before the class start.
