What if a humble nut beneath your feet could change the way you see your place in the world? Acorns invite us to rediscover the abundance around us. As we learn the skills to process them into food, we are sustained and nourished by this seasonal gift. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore the ecological significance of oaks and Indigenous food histories of acorns in Indiana and around the world, then learn step by step how to process acorns into flour for baking and cooking, from foraging and collection to preparing acorns for dehydration and storage.

Once we’ve covered acorn processing, we’ll discuss the possibilities of using acorn flour to bake and cook, along with tried-and-true recipes to give you the confidence to make and use flour at home. During this workshop, you’ll also have the opportunity to taste homemade acorn baked goods, learn to hold a deeper connection to our local forests, share stories and reflect on our own gratitude for our local environment, and develop new appreciation for how food is all around us.

NOTE: Participants with food allergies should be aware that while acorn flour is gluten free, the food provided will contain eggs, dairy, and is not GF-safe. Additionally, acorn-dyed, block-printed shirts made by the instructor will be available for purchase (cash/check/Venmo) at the end of the workshop for those who are interested.
