Explore the major acting techniques that have shaped modern performance in Constellation’s Acting Techniques: A Practical Survey, a hands-on, process-oriented course designed for adults who want to deepen their understanding of the actor’s craft. Whether you are brand new to acting, returning to the stage after time away, or looking to expand your existing toolkit, this 7-week class offers a practical introduction to several foundational approaches to performance.

Each week, students will investigate a different acting method through discussion, guided exercises, partner work, and short text-based explorations. From Stanislavski’s “Magic If” to Meisner’s active listening, Stella Adler’s imagination work, Lee Strasberg’s sensory recall, Michael Chekhov’s physical technique, Uta Hagen’s object exercises, and Practical Aesthetics’ action-based scene analysis, this course invites actors to discover what works best for them while building greater truth, specificity, and confidence on stage.

Through a combination of acting exercises, improvisational exploration, sensory work, physical practice, object work, and short scene study, students will gain practical experience with a wide range of tools used by actors in rehearsal and performance. This class emphasizes curiosity, experimentation, and artistic risk-taking in a safe, supportive, and collaborative environment.

Rather than focusing on one “right” way to act, Acting Techniques: A Practical Survey encourages students to test-drive different approaches, strengthen their instincts, and leave with a more versatile, adaptable, and confident acting practice.

Notes:

- This class may require light outside preparation, including reading short scenes or monologues and practicing exercises between sessions.
- Attendance is crucial, as each week introduces a different technique and builds toward a broader understanding of the actor’s craft. If you foresee conflicts, please consider joining us for a future class.
